To install Velocity 3.9.0, follow these high-level steps:

  1. Ensure your computer(s) meet the Hardware and Software Requirements.

  2. Install the operating system (and any required Service Pack) if you have not already. The version of Windows you install depends on the Velocity role each computer will perform — see Supported Windows versions below.

  3. Install SQL Server. Refer to the Software Requirements for supported versions.

  4. Install Velocity.

For a flowchart of the installation steps, see the Overview Installation Flowchart. If your system includes Hirsch’s FICAM Solution, see the hardware and software components listed in Hirsch’s FICAM Solution.

Installation Options

The Velocity Installer provides installation options for the Server, Client, Database, and Standalone Workstation roles. These options let you implement access control systems with varying degrees of complexity to suit a range of needs:

  • If you have a small facility that only requires one computer (or you want a separate system for testing or training), you only need a single installation of Velocity on a standalone Workstation.

  • If you have a larger facility that requires multiple clients, first install a Velocity Server, then install the Velocity Clients.

  • If you want to use a separate computer for the Velocity database, first install a licensed edition of a supported version of Microsoft SQL Server on that computer, then choose the Data installation option (on the Install Options screen during the Velocity installation) to install the Velocity database there. You can then install a Velocity Server and the Velocity Clients.

Make sure the SQL Server Browser service is running so the Velocity Server and Velocity Client installations can locate the separate database server.

For end users with Velocity integrations developed by Hirsch Global Services, contact your Regional Sales Manager for assistance with updating to Velocity 3.9.0.

SQL Server requirements

Velocity 3.9.0 requires Microsoft SQL Server 2017 or later.

Both new installations of and upgrades to Velocity 3.9.0 require Microsoft SQL Server 2017 or later. Velocity 3.9.0 can install the free Express Edition of SQL Server 2019. If the Express edition is not adequate for your needs, install a licensed edition of a supported version of SQL Server (2017 or 2019) before performing a new Server installation of Velocity 3.9.0. If SQL Server 2017 or 2019 is already installed on your server, the Velocity 3.9.0 Installer detects and uses your full edition of SQL Server for the Velocity database.

Registration and updates

Before upgrading to Velocity 3.9.0 from a pre-3.7 release, you must register your Velocity software and obtain the necessary license(s). See the Velocity Licensing topic for details.

Existing Velocity customers updating to 3.9.0 must use the Velocity Update executable Velocity_Update_3.9.0(build-3.9.0.890).exe instead of the Velocity Installer Velocity_Installer_3.9.0(build-3.9.0.890).exe.

For more information, see Updating from Velocity 3.6 (or higher) to Velocity 3.9.0.
