How to backup their Enteprise database to an external drive, or how to restore the database from backup after a DB failure

Instructions

Solution:

Backup

Backups are saved nightly at 11pm server time.  The user can specify how many backups are kept; the default is 3.  If the user chooses to back up images and videos, only the most current snapshot will be saved, and incrementally updated each night.

Restore

A database restore is intended to restore a database on a replacement enterprise server unit, configured with the same static IP address as the old unit.  The replacement unit should be empty – all data should be erased if this is not a newly shipped system.  A customer will need to obtain a level 4 password from 3VR technical support in order to perform a restore.

  1.  Disconnect the failed enterprise server from the network and power it off.

  2. Disconnect the database backup drive from the failed enterprise server.

  3. Install the new enterprise server – plug in, connect to network, power on.

  4. Configure the new enterprise server with the same static IP as the old enterprise.

  5. Upgrade the new enterprise server to the appropriate software version, if needed.

  6. Connect the database backup drive to the new enterprise server.

  7. Open SystemManager on the new enterprise  server.

  8. Select the external drive in the ‘Database backup drive’ setting.

  9. If the user has backed up images and videos, set the ‘Back up Images and Videos’ setting to True.  If this is not set, then images and videos on the backup drive will not be copied over with the database restore.

  10. Right-click on the enterprise server in the Manage Servers pane, and select Restore from Backup.

  11. Select the desired backup file – probably the most recent one.

  12. Click Restore.

  13. Click Restore on the confirmation indicating that all data will be replaced and that System Manager will close.

  14. SystemManager should close, and after 5-10 seconds of ‘Authenticating…,’ shell will say verifying and updating database for a few minutes.

  15. Log in to the new enterprise server and verify that everything looks ok.

  16. Update any users, email recipients, servers on the enterprise, cases, etc, that were modified after the last backup.

If the user is not at level 4, clicking Restore from Backup will tell the user to contact 3VR technical support.  We want to make sure that customers are using this feature in appropriate situations.

Any changes made to the enterprise after the most recent backup will not be saved.  This includes changes to users, email recipients, servers added or removed to the enterprise, and any activity on enterprise cases.
