Introduction

The uTrust TS ScrambleFactor is a physical access control reader that provides controlled access to secured premises. This document gives basic user instructions and installation/wiring details. ScrambleFactor SF.3 is a multi-factor authentication reader that supports RFID, contact smart cards, fingerprint biometric, and an LCD with a touch keypad for PIN entry.

Reader Parts

The SF.3 reader has two parts:

  • A 2-gang adaptor plate with integrated Fascia seal/gasket secured direct to a wall, to a US double-gang box or to an existing Hirsch mounting box

The TS ScrambleFactor SF.3 has the following interfaces:

Installation

The wiring methods follow the National Electrical Code (ANSI/NFPA70), local codes, and the authorities having jurisdiction.

Infrastructure List

All cabling and wiring shall be UL-listed and/or UL-recognized.

The cabling shall comply with UL2556 VW-1 for IEC62368-compliant installations.

Reader to be powered from a UL-certified access control panel or Class 2 Linear  DC PSU - 12 V, 1A min (for uL-compliant installations).

ES1 / PS2 Linear DC PSU - 12 V, 1A min (for IEC 62368 compliant installations).

Connection Details

The connections and pinout for the terminal connector on the TS ScrambleFactor SF.3 reader are indicated on the label attached to the 2-gang adapter plate shown in the figure below.

The Shield of the external cable is to be connected to the Drain pin on the SF.3 connector.

During wiring, make sure that the PWR conductor does not touch any other wires, as this might affect reader functionality or cause damage.

Installing the SF.3 Reader

 Separating the Fascia LCD Assembly and 2-Gang Adaptor Plate before Installation
  • Step:1 Hold the back cover lid of the 2-gang adaptor plate and the Fascia+LCD assembly with both hands.

  • Step:2 While holding the 2-gang adaptor plate securely, move the Fascia+LCD assembly upward. This will disengage the locking hooks on the fascia from the 2-gang adaptor.

  • Step:3 Pull the Fascia+LCD assembly towards you to separate the Fascia+LCD assembly from the 2-gang adaptor plate.

Different Methods of Mounting the Reader

Assembling the Ferrite core on the cable

1. As shown in the Step:1 image below, strip off approximately 6 inches of the OSDP cable's overall jacket from the wall and put them through the hole in the mounting box.

2. Wind the cable’s conductors twice without a jacket and clamp the ferrite core onto the wires close to the reader connectors, as in Steps 2 and 3.

Assembling 2-Gang Adaptor Plate

The steps below describe the assembly steps involved in the 2-gang Adaptor plate on the Mounting Box, US 2 Gang Box, and Mounting Template.

 Mounting Box
  1. Make the holes on the wall to match the mounting box screw positions. Secure the mounting box to the wall using nylon anchor plugs with screw wall 6-18X1.5”.

  2. Pull the cables from the wall through the mounting box (refer to Assembling the Ferrite core on the cable topic above) and secure the 2-gang adaptor plate onto the Mounting Box using 6-32 X 3/4 STAINLESS BLACKENED Screws.

  1. Secure the 2-gang adaptor plate on the installed US 2 gang box using the screw wall 6-18X1.5”.

  2. Pull the cables from the wall through the US gang box and the 2-gang adaptor plate.

  1. Make the holes on the wall to match the mounting template screw positions. Make the cut-out on the wall corresponding to the SF.2 and SF.3 outline to match the mounting template as shown in the drawing.

  2. Secure the 2-gang adaptor plate on the wall using the nylon anchor plugs with screw wall 6-18X1.5”.

  3. Pull the cables from the wall through the 2-gang adaptor plate.

The mounting template is provided with the unit in the IBOX containing the SF.3 reader.

 Locking the Fascia+LCD Assembly and the 2-Gang Adaptor
  • In Step:1, Hook the Fascia sub-assembly onto the 2-gang adaptor plate.

  • In Step:2, Press the Fascia +LCD assembly and push it down to lock it in place.

  • In Step:3, Secure the Fascia +LCD assembly on the 2-gang adaptor plate with the PAN HEAD X2 M3X L8 screws.

  • Finally, remove the protective film from the Fascia+LCD assembly.

 Separating the Fascia+LCD Assembly from the 2-Gang Adaptor

To separate the Fascia+LCD assembly,

  • Step:1 Unscrew the PAN HEAD X2 M3X L8 screws from the Fascia +LCD assembly.

  • Step:2 Hold the Fascia+LCD assembly and push upward. This will disengage the locking hooks on the fascia from the dry wall adaptor.

  • Step:3 Pull the Fascia+LCD assembly towards you to separate it from the 2-gang adaptor plate.

Power Up and Testing

  • Power up the reader

  1. Buzzer sounds one short Beep followed by a long beep.

  2. The LCD turns ON, and the home screen is displayed.

  • Press the START button on the home screen

  1. The screen will display a KEYPAD for PIN entry mode.

  • Present a card

  1. Contactless card- The LCD screen updates to show the card screen.

  2. Contact card- The LCD screen updates when inserting the contact card into the slot.

Firmware and Software Versions

The SF.3 reader has two PCBAs, TouchSecure MB PCBA and Display PCBA, which can be firmware updated in the field.

TouchSecure MB PCBA

The firmware version follows the format <major>.<minor>.<build Number>.<sha>

The current version is 4.0. yyyy.zzzzzzz

Display PCBA

The firmware version follows the format <major>.<minor>.<build Number>-<Date>-<Timestamp>

The current version is 1.0.0-YYMMDD-HHMMSS. Where the build number gets auto-incremented for every build.

Certifications

 UL 294
  • Intertek has evaluated the communication between the reader and the panel through Wiegand and RS485 for UL Standard Certifications.

  • Please note that if the reader is powered by a supply other than the Mx series controller, the power supply should be a UL 294 class 2 power supply.

 UL 294 Access Controls Performance Levels

The UL Certification Standard sets guidelines and requirements for access control readers to meet specific performance levels. The Scramble Factor reader is evaluated based on the following metrics:

  • Destructive attack: Level I

  • Line security: Level I

  • Endurance: Level II

  • Standby Power: Level I

FCC

This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules.  Operation is subject to the following two conditions:

  1. This device may not cause harmful interference.

  2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device under part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to protect reasonably against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates uses and can radiate radio frequency energy, and if not installed and used by the instructions, it may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. Suppose this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on. In that case, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

  • Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.

  • Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver.

  • Connect the equipment to an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected.

  • Consult the dealer or an experienced radio/TV technician for help.

Changes or modifications not expressly approved by Hirsch could void the user's authority to operate the equipment.

IC

This reader device complies with Industry Canada license-exempt RSS standard(s).

Operation is subject to the following two conditions:

  1. This device may not cause interference

  2. This device must accept any interference that may cause undesired operation.

CE

Hirsch hereby declares that the uTrust TS ScrambleFactor SF.3 reader Model 84x3ABT complies with the essential requirements and other relevant provisions of the CE directive.

Troubleshooting

Reader not powering up

  • Check the power connections to the reader.

  • Ensure the power of the reader is as recommended.

  • Unplug and re-plug the reader power at the reader or control panel end.

Contactless card not detected / access denied

  • Ensure that the card is presented in the reader's reading area.

  • Ensure that the cards are correctly enrolled in the control panel.

  • Check if the RFID card’s antenna is intact by cross-checking with another RFID reader.

  • Ensure that the reader is online on the control panel.

Contact Card not detected/ access denied

  • Ensure that the card is inserted into the contact slot with the contacts facing upwards.

  • Clean the contacts on the smart card if they are dirty.

  • Ensure that the reader is online on the control panel.

Fingerprint not detected / access denied

  • Ensure that the finger is not wet or excessively dry.

  • Ensure that the finger is not dirty.

  • Wipe the FP sensor glass with a soft cloth to remove any dirt in the glass.

Invalid Pin entry

  • Ensure that PIN is enrolled.

  • Ensure that the finger is not wet.

  • Wipe the LCD/ touchscreen with a soft cloth to remove any dirt/ moisture on the LCD.

Contact your local dealer if you cannot diagnose a problem and take corrective action. The following steps should be performed to gather helpful information:

  1. Make a detailed description of the problem.

  2. Make a detailed description of the system, including:

    1. Controller type

    2. Firmware versions

    3. Type and number of readers

  3. Specify how long the system has been installed and list any previous problems.

  4. Approximate the distance between system components, such as the distance between the controller and readers.

Hirsch recommends that all physical installations and cabling meet the specifications published in the appropriate electrical standard to ensure the proper operation of all connected devices.

When determining the required power delivery for connected devices, Installers should calculate cabling needs based on each connected device's power specifications, the power source's operational output, and the voltage drop relative to the length of the cable.

Hirsch does not specify cable types or gauges due to the wide variance of available cable configurations and similar wide variance in installation types and environmental conditions. All examples provided throughout this installation document are designed to provide guidance only and should be verified by a certified low-voltage electrician or contractor on a per-site basis.
